Almost $13,000 in Community Grants

In 2006, Hockley County visionaries including Sycily Lattimore and others came together to establish an endowment that would be a resource for donors, a source of grants for worthy local causes and a partner for local non-profit organizations.
The Hockley County Endowment was created by and for the people of this area, and is an affiliate of the Community Foundation of West Texas. Today the endowment has over $623,000 and supports funds for 26 organizations including the Hockley County Senior Citizens Center, School Systems within Hockley County, the South Plains Food Bank and many more. To date the endowment has given 56 grants totaling $107,125 to area non-profits. Each year, as the endowment grows, the group is able to give back even more to the community. This year alone the Hockley County Endowment will have given almost $13,000 in grants supporting worthy organizations and causes in the area.
Due to generous endowments and donations, the HCE now has over $623,000 in our fund balance, 26 designated funds, and is pleased to award $12,948.55 during this grant cycle.

Hockley County Endowment Grants Recipients
Jill Pitts with the City of Levelland – Animal Friends is accepting a grant of $2,000 to help provide veterinary care for the dogs and cats that enter the shelter. Animals are given vaccinations and other needed treatment to make them ready for adoption.
Rebecca Currington is the Administrator of the Hockley County Veterans Assistance Office and is accepting a grant of $2,000. The grant will support the organization’s Veteran’s Day event. Veterans of all wars will be honored and recognized at a breakfast with a special guest speaker on Veteran’s Day. The grant will also assist in providing a local veteran the opportunity to participate in an Honor Flight.
Alexis Gavina is a kindergarten teacher at Levelland Academic Beginning Center and is accepting a grant of $700 to provide flexible seating in her classroom. Flexible seating has been shown to use up excess energy, increase motivation and engagement, create better oxygen flow to the brain, and improve core strength and overall posture.
Barbra Pinner, Mayor of Levelland and Chairwoman of the Levelland Chamber of Commerce, is accepting a grant of $1,500. The grant will support transportation costs for Leadership Levelland. Participants in Leadership Levelland are provided greater access to community resources and networking while also motivating them to help make a difference in the community by becoming actively involved.
Mike Holster is a member of National Day of Prayer committee and is accepting a grant of $1,000 on behalf of the Levelland Ministerial Alliance. The grant will support the organization’s National Day of Prayer Breakfast. The purpose of the event is to bring the community together, regardless of faith, to pray for the country and the community.
Sallie Morris is the Vice President of the Morris Safe House and is accepting a grant of $3,500 to help cover veterinary expenses. Morris Safe House rescues dogs from the Levelland Shelter to save their lives, have population control surgery, implant a microchip, and place them in homes where they will be loved and cared for.
Jerry Beth Shannon is the Volunteer Curator for the Ropesville Museum Association and is accepting a matching grant of $1,425 to provide exterior lighting to the Ropesville Community Building. The lighting will enhance safety for users of the building, protect the property from vandalism, and spotlight the Texas State Historical Marker and the monument to clients of the Ropesville Farms Project.
Cristal Isaacks is the Librarian at South Elementary School and is accepting a grant of $823.55. The grant will help to create a Makerspace in both Levelland ISD Elementary School libraries. This program is designed to create a space where students gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of tools and materials, incorporating Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
