Research suggests a student completing one college course while enrolled in high school is more likely to complete college than a student who does not. The cost for dual-credit courses cannot be ignored as a possible deterrent for otherwise engaged students. Enter LIFE Foundation.
WHAT IS THE LIFE FOUNDATION?
Formed in 1997, The Levelland ISD Foundation for Excellence (LIFE) exists to change the future of Levelland High School students. Through dual-credit scholarship, LIFE enhances student experience by reimbursing the cost of dual credit college courses up to 18 hours. The LIFE Foundation has also awarded funds to teachers for creative and innovative academic projects not supported by school budgets.
Assistance from LIFE is available to any Levelland High School student attending dual-credit classes at South Plains College. Here is Nathan's Story.
NATHAN is a motivated student. So motivated, in fact, he decided to finish high school as the first Levelland ISD student to graduate with his Associate’s Degree at the same time. Nathan needed financial assistance to reach his academic goals. Due to illnesses in his immediate family members and mounting medical bills, there were not enough funds to pay for all his dual-credit courses.
By reimbursing SPC costs, the LIFE Foundation made it possible for Nathan to blow right past his original goal! Graduating LISD in three years and receiving his Associate's Degree at SPC as a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Nathan is blazing a trail for others to follow.
Asked how LIFE Foundation has impacted his future, Nathan responded that he wants to "do what I can to help my community,' and he wants to always encourage students, considering dual-credit courses while in high school, to go for it!
Having recently awarded a grant to Levelland ISD Foundation for Excellence, the Community Foundation of West Texas is inspired by Nathan’s story and the impact and vision of the LIFE Foundation. We are proud to grant funds to the places that make life better for West Texans. The LIFE Foundation is doing just that. Keep an eye out, we look forward to sharing more Levelland students' success stories!
